The art of the foodstagram can be complicated but here at Stanley House we’ve got the tips and tricks to help you nail the perfect pic.

It’s all about lighting

It’s all about lighting - if you can get your dish in front of a window with natural light this is preferred but if you are out at night get your hands on a selfie light from Amazon a la Alex Earle. Not only will this let you take great photos of your friends it also clips onto the back of your phone meaning you can light up any dim-light table.

Turn on the grid

Turn on the grid - in your iPhone settings under camera turn on “grid” this will section out your camera screen into 9 parts so you can make sure your subject is level and right where you want it.

Play with exposure

Play with exposure - this can completely change how your image will look. Whether its moody with low exposure or bright and light with high exposure this can completely change the feeling of your photo.

Try different angles and placements

Try different angles and placements - play around with how many dishes or drinks are in the frame and shoot at a 45 degree, front on or overheard angle for options.

3x zoom could be your best friend

3x zoom could be your best friend - If you’ve found that your food looks a little distorted or blurry when you put your iPhone too close to that plate, try stepping back and zooming in. Not only will your food look better you’ll also capture that “casual” Gen Z style of photography that social users love. Think Bistrot 916 vibes.

Happy feasting (for your eyes and stomach)!
